Restaurant to take boyfriend near Madison Square Garden?

I'm going to NYC with my boyfriend next week for his birthday. We're going to the auto show at Jacob Javits, and then I want to take him to dinner. I'd like to eat somewhere in the close vicinity of Madison Square Garden so we don't have to worry about running to catch a train. Any suggestions for a good, reasonably priced place? He's turning 24, and we're into American, Italian and Barbecue food. And we looooove desserts lol. Thanks!
